Conference Summaries Challenges in Treating Advanced Lung Cancer: ASCO 2002 Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related death in the United States and Western Europe. This year, 170,000 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer and nearly 150,000 will die from this disease.
What's New in the Treatment of Mesothelioma Mesothelioma is a relatively rare cancer and when inoperable has no proven effective standard therapy. There are currently no FDA approved chemotherapy treatments for this disease.
New Approaches to the Treatment of Advanced NSCLC: ASCO 2002 Chemotherapy is the standard of care for good performance status patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). 1 Cisplatin-containing doublet combinations with agents such as Navelbine® and Gemzar® have been shown to be superior to cisplatin alone, and many cisplatin-containing doublets have shown equivalency.
Breast Cancer Genetic Profiling: Implications and Outcomes: In breast cancer, currently utilized clinical and pathologic characteristics do not adequately predict disease course and outcome. The technology to genetically characterize individual tumors has led to the realization that histologically similar tumors are genetically heterogeneous.
What's New in the Treatment of Metastatic Breast Cancer Taxotere® has shown impressive activity as initial therapy for metastatic breast cancer, with response rates consistently > 40% in multiple phase II trials.
Adjuvant and Neoadjuvant Breast Cancer Treatment: Where Are We Going? The incorporation of taxanes into standard adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer has been hotly debated over the past several years.
Emerging Trends in the Adjuvant and Metastatic Treatment of Colorectal Cancer: ASCO 2002 Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major cause of cancer mortality in the Western world. In the United States, it is estimated that there will be 148,300 new cases and 56,600 deaths from this disease in 2002.
What's New in the Treatment of Prostate Cancer: ASCO 2002 Chemotherapy for the treatment of androgen-independent prostate cancer has evolved over the past 20 years. Clinical trials in the 1980s and 1990s demonstrated single-agent treatments to be ineffective; in contrast, clinicians and investigators treating patients in the new millennium are faced with a variety of new targets and combinations.
New Approaches to Treating Pancreatic Cancer: ASCO 2002 Treatment of patients with advanced pancreatic cancer remains poor, with Gemzar® being the most active single agent at the present time. Over 3,000 patients with advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer have been treated with Gemzar®.
Advances in Managing Ovarian Cancer: ASCO 2002 Regardless of an initial high response rate to systemic chemotherapy, a majority of patients with ovarian cancer will relapse and may develop drug resistant disease. While recurrent disease may be palliated, cure is unlikely.
