Conference Summaries
Antiangiogenesis Emerges as Promising Cancer Therapy
It has long been recognized that the development of clinically relevant tumors is dependent on new blood vessel formation to sustain growth. The microenvironment of a small metastatic cancer deposit disrupts the normal balance of proangiogenic and antiangiogenic forces by secreting growth factors responsible for stimulation of vessels.

Progress in the Treatment of Early Stage Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
Lung cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States. While non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for about 80% of lung cancers, only 25% of these are candidates for surgical resection at the time of diagnosis.

Pancreatic Cancer- New Approaches to Treatment
The randomized trial reported in 1997 by Dr. Burris, et.al. defined the superiority of Gemzar® over bolus 5-FU in the treatment of advanced pancreatic cancer. Since then, single-agent Gemzar® has been the standard of care for this disease.

Future Directions in the Treatment of Advanced Ovarian Cancer
Presentations at the 2003 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists evaluated both first-line and second-line chemotherapy regimens for ovarian cancer.

Are We Making Progress in the Treatment of Mesothelioma?
Mesotheliomas are neoplasms of the serosal membranes of the body cavities, arising from the pleura, peritoneum, pericardium, tunica vaginalis testis, and ovarian epithelium.

Gemzar®-Based Regimens for the Treatment of Locally Advanced or Metastatic Bladder Cancer
The development of combination chemotherapy in the treatment of locally advanced or metastatic bladder cancer almost 20 years ago has prolonged the median survival for patients with this disease.

The Current Status of Multimodality Treatment of Gastric Cancer
Gastric cancer remains one of the most common cancers worldwide. Over 75% of patients with gastric cancer die of their disease. The incidence of cancer of the distal half of the stomach has been decreasing in developed countries while that of the cardia and gastroesophageal junction has been rapidly rising.

What's New in the Management of Metastatic Breast Cancer?
In this era of multiple options for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer (MBC), the best treatment programs seek to combine maximum efficacy with minimum toxicity.

Aranesp®: Advances in the Management of Anemia
The role of erythropoietic management in the treatment of the cancer patient continues to evolve and expand rapidly. Several abstracts presented at ASCO in May 2003 provide insight into the role of Aranesp® (darbepoetin alfa) in this increasingly important area.

Taxotere®-Based Regimens in the Management of Prostate Cancer
At the 2003 meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, researchers presented advances in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Implications from Recent Trials
At the 39th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, presentations on the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) provided additional confirmation that ‘the chemotherapy efficacy plateau’ has been reached.

Advances in the Treatment of Multiple Myeloma
The 2003 meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology had less than 60 presentations on multiple myeloma (MM). This was significantly less than the more than 200 abstracts presented at ASH in 2002.
