Conference Summaries

Treatment of Multiple Myeloma-An Update: ASH 2001
A German cooperative group compared VAD induction with VID, a substitution of oral idarubicin 10 mg/m 2/day x 4 days, for continuous infusion doxorubicin, along with Oncovin®/dexamethasone. Among 108 evaluable patients, the CR/PR rate was similar: 69% for VAD and 80% for VID.

Advances in the Treatment of Hodkin's Disease: ASH 2001
The results of several key clinical trials on the management of Hodgkin’s disease were presented at ASH. Notably, investigators from Germany presented data on a dose-intensive BEACOPP supported with Neupogen®, producing a two-year freedom from progression of 91% in newly diagnosed patients with stage II-IV Hodgkin’s disease.

Advances in Stem Cell Transplantation for AML
Researchers from the Royal Marsden Hospital compared outcomes of 40 patients receiving allogeneic bone marrow transplants (BMT) with the outcomes of 19 who received Neupogen®-stimulated PBSC.

What’s New in the Management of AML: ASH 2001
Intensified Induction Therapy Including High Dose Cytarabine and All-Trans Retinoic Acid Appears Promising for the Treatment of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia

Importance of C-kit, Cytogenetics and Other Predictive Tests in AML: ASH 2001
Researchers affiliated with CALGB have confirmed that pre-treatment cytogenetics assists in risk-adapted treatment of patients with de novo AML. They examined outcomes of 1,311 patients with de novo AML.

The Changing Role of Gleevec® in CML: ASH 2001
A number of abstracts updated the results of treating CML with the orally administered inhibitor of the BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase, Gleevec® in the US (Glivec® in Europe). This has been one of the most remarkable drugs of the last decade and its ultimate role in the treatment of CML is still being defined.

Advances in the Management of Chronic Phase CML: ASH 2001
Alpha Interferon remains the primary drug for initial treatment of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and will constitute the control for any comparison with Gleevec® or Gleevec® combinations.

New Regimens Improve Outcomes in the Treatment of Aggressive NHL
The German High-Grade Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Study Group presented results of a study evaluating the addition of etoposide to CHOP for young patients with low-risk aggressive NHL.
