Allogeneic stem cell transplants have been an integral component of treatment of young patients since the 1970’s. In the early studies, approximately 10% of refractory patients could be cured with an allogeneic transplant from an HLA-matched sibling.

In children with ALL, allogeneic stem cell transplants are reserved for children with high-risk features and for those who have relapsed following treatment. For children who have failed chemotherapy, allogeneic transplants are more effective than continued chemotherapy.
