The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted PhiloGene, Inc. orphan drug designation for their investigative agent VEGFb. The designation is for the treatment of patients with stages IIb through stage IV melanoma.

VEGFb (vascular endothelial growth factor “b”) is the native form of VEGF which possess anti-angiogenic properties. VEGFb is PhiloGene’s most advanced program, and received orphan drug status for a larger subset of melanoma than was requested.
