No Survival Advantage for High-dose Chemotherapy with Autologous Stem Cell Support for Localized Breast Cancer (12/18/2007)
Researchers affiliated with the MDACC-EBMT Meta-Analysis Group have reported that high-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell infusion modestly improves disease-free survival (DFS) but does not significantly improve overall survival (OS) among women with node-positive breast cancer. These results were presented at the 2007 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

Bexxar® Plus BEAM and Autologous Stem Cells for Relapsed Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL) Very Effective (12/10/2007)
Researchers from the City of Hope, University of California at San Diego and Rush Medical Center have reported that Bexxar® (yttrium-90) and high-dose BEAM (carmustine, etoposide, cytarabine and melphalan) followed by the infusion of autologous stem cells is safe and effective in the treatment of patients with recurrent non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL). The details of this study appeared in an early on-line publication on November 19, 2007 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

510(k) Clearance Granted for AXP AutoXpress™ Platform (10/15/2007)

Velcade® Alternating with Dexamethasone Effective for Induction of Myeloma Patients Scheduled for Autologous Transplantation (10/9/2007)
Researchers from Spain have reported that alternating Velcade (bortezomib) and dexamethasone produce partial a response (PR) or greater in 65% of multiple myeloma patients under the age of 66 years who are having an autologous stem cell transplant. The details of this report appeared in the October 1, 2007 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

High-Dose Chemotherapy Effective Salvage Therapy for Male Choriocarcinoma (8/2/2007)
Researchers from the University of Indiana have reported that autologous stem cell transplantation can salvage 46% of patients with male choriocarcinoma who have failed initial cisplatin-based chemotherapy. The details of this report were published in the August, 2007 issue of Bone Marrow Transplantation.

Will Intra-osseous Injection of Umbilical Cord Blood Reduce Graft Failures? (8/15/2008)
Researchers from Italy have reported that the injection of umbilical cord blood directly into the pelvic bones of patients with leukemia appears promising. These results were recently published in an early online publication of the Lancet Oncology on August 9, 2008.

Statins May Reduce Acute Graft-versus-host Disease (6/17/2008)
Researchers from Ohio State University have reported that statins may have an impact on the incidence of acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in recipients of allogeneic stem cell transplants. The details of this Phase II study were reported at the 2008 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago, May 30-June 2.

Prochymal Receives Fast-Track Status for Initial Treatment of Acute GVHD (12/13/2007)
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Osiris Therapeutics fast-track status for their agent Prochymal™ as initial therapy for acute graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD).

Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation with Reduced Intensity Regimen Effective (11/14/2007)
Researchers from the University of Minnesota have reported that adults with hematological diseases have a three year survival of almost 50% following umbilical cord blood transplantation after a reduced intensity treatment regimen. The details of this study appeared in the October 15, 2007 issue of Blood.
