Idaho Company Helps Cancer Patients and Caregivers Displaced by Hurricane Katrina

Website and toll-free number established for cancer patients.

Ketchum, ID, September 7, 2005 – Cancer Consultants, Inc. a leading provider of cancer education materials and information to patients, caregivers, and physicians, in collaboration with the Community Oncology Alliance (COA) has established a website, www.katrinacancerhelp.com, and toll-free call center, 888-912-9111, to assist thousands of cancer patients and caregivers displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

Services provided include:

  • Online resources and a toll-free phone number for patients seeking oncology clinics in their immediate area
  • A venue for displaced caregivers, such as physicians and nurses, to register their current contact information so that it can be made available to physicians and patients
  • Online registration for oncology clinics willing to provide treatment and medical supplies for displaced patients
  • Volunteer opportunities in affected states

Dozens of cancer programs throughout Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi are closed due to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Over 150 community-based cancer clinics in the Southeast have mobilized physicians, nurses, and staff to care for cancer patients currently living away from their homes.

“The care and well-being of our patients is our top priority. The community cancer clinics that have welcomed cancer patients displaced by Hurricane Katrina truly tell the story of what community cancer care is all about. We estimate that care for thousands of cancer patients has been disrupted. Many of these patients were on active chemotherapy regimens and are overdue for treatment,” said Dr. Leonard Kalman, President, COA. “These newly created resources will significantly help displaced cancer patients quickly locate specialty care providers.”

Dr. Charles Weaver, CEO of Cancer Consultants, Inc. stated: “I am very pleased and proud that our employees volunteered to work throughout the Labor Day weekend to develop this Internet application that will serve cancer patients and providers displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Over 200 cancer physicians have already contacted the Website to update their information and volunteer their clinics’ services to take care of patients displaced by Katrina.”
