Use of Revlimid® Strong in First Quarter 2006
Westlake Village, CA, May 22, 2006 (PR Newswire) – ICI, Inc., a leading provider of expertise-based oncology market research, reports first-quarter 2006 usage of Revlimid® is strong for Multiple Myeloma and Myelodysplastic Syndome (MDS) and hematologists and medical oncologists perceive the drug as promising. The study, Hematology, evaluated hematologic oncology practice patterns for the year’s first quarter. Conducted at the end of the first quarter, it surveyed 100 hematologists and medical oncologists from across the country. Hematology aims to provide an immediate overview of current attitudes, usage, and trends in the treatment of Non-Hogkin’s Lymphoma (NHL), Multiple Myeloma, Myelodysplastic Syndome (MDS), Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML), Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL).
This quarter’s findings show 29% of hematologists and medical oncologists have used Revlimid to treat Multiple Myeloma even in the absence of FDA approval for this indication. Consequently, physicians are concerned about reimbursement and cost but rate the drug’s efficacy and ease of administration favorably. Meanwhile, approved therapies such as Thalomid® and Decadron® continue to be the most preferred first-line treatments for Multiple Myeloma patients.
For Myelodysplastic Syndome (MDS), Revlimid is perceived as a promising new treatment strategy by 68% of respondents followed by Vidaza® and Dacogen®. Revlimid appears to be taking market share away from Thalomid in this area, and almost half of the physicians surveyed report they have used Revlimid to treat MDS patients. Those physicians estimate 13% of their MDS patients were treated with Revlimid in the first quarter, and they expect that usage will almost double by the end of Q2 2006. However, Vidaza alone or in combination with Thalomid or Revlimid remains the preferred initial non-growth factor treatment for low-risk and high-risk MDS patients.
Other highlights from the survey include:
- Radioimmunotherapy (RIT) and Rituxan continue to be the most promising therapies for the treatment of indolent and intermediate / high-grade NHL.
- Thalomid and Decadron are still the most preferred drugs for first-line treatment of patients with Multiple Myeloma.
- 54% of respondents expect their use of Velcade® to rise in 2006.
- Cytosar® combined with Idamycin® remains the preferred induction regimen for younger and older AML patients.
- An average of 5% of CLL patients were treated with Campath® in the past six months.
The objectives of this study (to be conducted once each quarter this year) are to:
- Provide an overview of current attitudes, usage, and trends in the hematology marketplace.
- Measure and track perceptions of safety and efficacy of established and emerging treatment strategies.
- Identify preferred first-line, second-line, and third-line treatment regimens by tumor type.
- Track the use of supportive care products.
- Track awareness of new treatment strategies by tumor type and identify how they are likely to be incorporated into physicians’ overall management strategy.
- Support and provide a roadmap for marketers to define targeted and specific market research programs to meet their requirements.
